How to be thankful
Verse: “’in every situation [no matter what the circumstances] be thankful and continually give thanks to God; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.’”
1 Thessalonians 5:18
How to be thankful.
I love how this verse above doesn’t say “give thanks in some circumstances.” No it says: “give thanks in all circumstances” which is much easier said than done. But it is possible to be thankful no matter what your circumstances are. So how do you be thankful in all circumstances?
1. Seek God daily!
How do you seek God? You seek God by reading His word, worshiping Him, listening to Him, and praying to Him. You seek Him daily. Honestly, this week being the first week back at college, I haven’t been seeking God daily. But you and I can do this together! Let’s make sure that we seek God daily because the more we seek Him, the more He will draw near to us (Psalm 125:1-2). The more we seek Him the more we will get to know Him and build a close relationship with Him. As we seek Him, we find more and more reasons to thank Him.
2. Make a gratitude journal and write in it daily!
Gratitude journals are so helpful. What you do to make one is find a journal, and everyday write down things you are thankful for. As you write in it, you will find more and more things to write down. This is a great way to start looking for all the positive things in your life. Because if we focus on the negative things in our lives, we will find them. But if we focus on the positive things in our lives, we will find reason to be thankful to God in any circumstance.
3. Focus on God and not your circumstances and praise God everyday.
How do you focus on God and not your circumstances? You fix your eyes on God by seeking Him, making a gratitude journal, and praising God everyday. Make a list of all the things you are thankful for and do that everyday if you have to. Because no matter what you are going through, there are always reasons to be thankful and reasons to praise God (Psalm 31:19).
4. Remember God’s promises:
God will love you forever. (Psalm 136:1) God will never leave you. (Hebrews 13:5) God will comfort you. (Isaiah 49:13) God will help you and always be there for you. (Psalm 121:1-2) God is always faithful. (Psalm 33:4) God keeps His promises. (Deuteronomy 7:9) God is good. (Psalm 31:19) God will draw near to you. (Psalm 125:1-2) You can do all things through Christ. (Phillpians 4:13) With God on your side, you can do anything! (Matthew 19:26) God has an amazing plan for your life. (Jeremiah 29:11) God is for you and on your side. (Psalm 118:6) God is all around you. (Psalm 125:1,2) God never changes. (Hebrews 13:8)
I pray that as I seek you daily, make a gratitude journal and write in it daily, focus on you and not my circumstances, praise you daily, and remember your promises that I become grateful and thankful for you. I ask that you help me fix my eyes on your goodness and all that you have done for me. Help me to always thank you and praise no matter what my circumstances are. I pray that as I seek you that I build a close relationship with you and learn more about you. I praise you for your love, goodness, mercy, grace, and forgiveness. I thank you because you are so good to me. You are a good Father and I love you Lord. I praise you for all that you do for me.
I thank you for all my many blessings and for Your Son.
In Jesus’s name, I pray, Amen!
